Divisional leaders emerge as the EHL season heats up

HAVERHILL, MA — As the calendar flips to November, the weather outside is cooling down while the action around the Eastern Hockey League is heating up.

Coming off the heels of the Ice Breaker Showcase and College Series, we are about a quarter of the way through the EHL and EHLP season. Here is a look around the leagues in this week’s edition of Short Shifts.

Streaking in the South

  • The hottest team in the EHL right now is the New Jersey 87’s (12-1-0). Coming off a 6-1 win over the Connecticut RoughRiders on Tuesday, the 87’s extended its winning streak to nine games, the longest current streak in the EHL.
  • Their top line consists of the top three scorers in the league so far: Alex Haar (14g, 17a, 31p), Ivan Kulagin (11g, 15a, 26p) and Dominic Bertolino (5g, 17a, 22p) have been the backbone of the 87’s incredible start to the season.
  • The New Jersey Bears (10-4-1) are not far behind the 87’s for the top spot in the South Division; they have won five consecutive games heading into Friday.
  • Jayden Juan led the Bears with a goal and an assist in their 5-3 win over Philadelphia Hockey Club on Thursday; he now has 17 points (7g, 10a) through 15 games.
  • The Bears will play PHC again on Friday afternoon with a chance to increase their winning streak to six games.

Hockey Central Rhode Island

  • Hockey Club Rhode Island is establishing itself as the top team in the Central Division; they have a 10-3-1 record and have the second-longest active winning streak with six straight victories.
  • Austin Haldane is leading the team with 12 goals and 19 points in 14 games so far this season. He found the back of the net in HC Rhode Island’s 5-2 win over the Providence Capitals on Wednesday.
  • What also makes HC Rhode Island’s success so interesting: after Haldane, the next top three scorers from the team are all ’07 birth years. Aiden Forcier (7g, 10a), Roberts Stamurs (7g, 10a) and Ernests Muska (6g, 10a) are all among the top 20 scorers in the EHL. No other ’07 in the league is in the top 40.
  • The same can be said for their goaltending. Angelo Evangelista, an ’07 birth year who recorded the win in HC Rhode Island’s win over the Caps, is off to a 3-1-1 start with a .936 save percentage and a shutout.

Meanwhile in the North and East

  • The New England Wolves (11-2-0) and New Hampshire Avalanche (10-1-1) are jockeying for first place in the North Division. 
  • Felipe-Miguel Miron, who is fourth in the EHL with 20 points (7g, 13a), had a goal and two helpers in the Wolves’ 5-3 win over the Bridgewater Bandits on Tuesday. 
  • The Avs have won three in a row, including a 5-4 win over the Express Hockey Club on Thursday. Ben Carfora had a goal and two assists while Patrick Cooley had a pair of goals for New Hampshire. 
  • Also of note in that game on Thursday, Express forward Ville Bodin scored again, giving him 11 goals through nine games this season.
  • The Seahawks are leading the East Division with a 9-2-2 record, and their last two games went to a shootout. On Wednesday, the Seahawks took down the Wizards 5-4, Aidan Neville tied the game late in the third and Jacob Roberts scored the shootout winner.
  • On Thursday, the Bandits stunned the Seahawks with a 2-1 victory. Chris Sidun scored the lone regulation goal while Liam McCall netted the only shootout goal, but it was Bandits goaltender Nicolas Gould who stole the show. He made 46 saves on 47 shots in regulation and overtime, then stopped all three Seahawks shots in the shootout.

Around the EHLP

  • Three teams in the Northeast Conference are red hot, and it starts with the first-place Express and their 11-1-1 record. Last weekend, they took down the Wolves 2-1 in overtime as Sviat Antipkin scored the game-winning goal.
  • The Avs have won three straight, including a 5-3 win over the Providence Capitals on Thursday and a 7-3 victory over the Wolves on Tuesday. Curtis Anderson, who is second on the team with 15 points (5g, 10a), finished this week with six points. He had two goals and two assists against the Wolves on Tuesday, then tacked on two helpers in their win over the Caps on Thursday.
  • The Seahawks have won four in a row, and that includes a 6-4 win over the Capitals on Tuesday. Six different players found the back of the net while Elliott Lucy recorded three helpers.
  • In the Mid-Atlantic Conference, the Union Jr. Thunder sits in first place with an 8-3-0 record. They are tied with the New Jersey Bears with 16 points but have four games in hand.
  • On Halloween, the Thunder took down the 87’s 3-2 in overtime. Nick Dove tied the game with seven seconds left in regulation, and Adam Míčka scored the OT winner. Union followed that performance with a 2-1 win over the Pennsylvania Huntsmen where Collin Gercken and Radek Jenik found the back of the net.
  • The Bears are 4-0-2 in their last six games, including a 4-3 win over the 87’s on Sunday. Dominic Moushon, who leads the league with 30 points (11g, 19a), scored in that game while Troy Gorski picked up a second-period hat trick.
